Potential Antecedents to Trust in Ad Hoc Emergency Response Virtual Teams

چکیده
This research explores the potential determinants of trust in newly formed virtual teams to better inform the choice of communication media for virtual emergency response groups for which interpersonal trust is crucial. Results of a laboratory experiment indicate that the way that communicants view their teammates and themselves as part of that team is significantly correlated with the level of trust that they experience. Impression formation, public selfawareness, perceived social presence, and self-disclosure are all found to have significant correlations with trust among ad hoc teammates. It is therefore recommended that the design of emergency response communication systems include features to foster these feelings thereby promoting trust among teammates. Our results are applicable to ad hoc emergency teams who interact for a period of time to address relief and recovery efforts after a major disaster or emergency.

The purpose of this research is to examine whether the team diversity and psychological factors (such as, trust and motivation) can influence performance of short-duration, ad-hoc virtual teams engaged in problem solving tasks. We focus on the diversities of the members of virtual teams across national culture, educational specialization, and collaboration technology proficiency. A laboratory e...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effects of Electronic Self-Portrayal on Trust in Virtual Teams
This research addresses the concept of electronic self-portrayal in synchronous computermediated communication of ad-hoc virtual teams. Electronic self-portrayal is the extent to which a communication system portrays the true identity of its users. It is hypothesized that increased information available due to self-portrayal will have an effect upon the trust and performance of ad-hoc virtual t...
متن کاملA Query Based Trust Evaluation Scheme for Emergency Response Communication Networks
The natural or man-made disaster demands an efficient communication and coordination among first responders to save life and other community resources. This requires the generation and exchange of current information among first responders and emergency management centers in real time for making life saving decisions. Normally, the traditional communication infrastructures such as landline or c...
متن کاملWith whom to coordinate, why and how in ad-hoc social media communities during crisis response
During crises directly affected people and observers join social media communities to discuss the event. They may share information relevant to response coordination, for example, specific resource needs. However, responders face a massive data overload and lack the time to monitor social media traffic for important and trustworthy information. To address these challenges, response teams may at...
